  1. I like the “Essential Teacher Knowledge: Core Concepts in English Language Teaching” book by Jeremy Hammer. This book is Written for teachers or people who would like to teach English. It consists of 110 units about English language and how to use it. The book comes with the DVD that shows how the teachers teach in the real situation. It also have an example of lesson plan that teacher can look at or use it in their teaching. For me, I really love the checklist questions for planning the lesson plan. There are 9 planning areas and 27 checklist items for teachers to keep in mind or ask ourselves. One particular planning area that I am interested in is “ lesson feel”. The example of the checklist items include “What is the whole lesson look/feel?” “What is the best way to start the lesson?” and “What is the most effective way of ending the lesson?”. I wish that I could see this checklist before planning my teaching lesson which I will teach in this afternoon.

    4. It is a great book, and I definitely recommend you to check it out. The lesson feel has 3 checklist items for teacher to prepare the lesson. He or she has to think about how to his or her want the lesson to feel, so he or she can prepare the learning lesson to match with the lesson feel.

  2. Dear David and Friends,
I come across with nice two books that I may use some hints and strategies in the books in my later on English teaching.
The first one is ETpedia: Materials Writing, 500 Ideas for creating English language materials. This book was written by Lindsay Clandfield and John Huges (2017). The book gives many creative ideas for writing language exercises and different types of questions in teaching all 4 skills. The book also provides worksheets for the teachers to be applied in their teaching class. For example, in writing reading comprehensive questions, in order to check if the students understand the reading text, the book suggests 10 main types of comprehensive questions.
    1. True/False statements
    2. Answer Yes, No, or Don't know
    3. Open questions
    4. Multiple choice
    5. Note taking
    6. Writing in the missing word
    7. Remove sentences
    8. Gapped text
    9. Summarize the paragraph
    10. Summarize using key words.
I found that the book is very nice written and organized with many useful tips and ideas. It is a charming book for teachers, who sometimes run out of the ideas what to prepare and how to teach and quiz students.

PS. I went further to find similar books online. Luckily, I found one written in 2014 from the same authors :).

Nowadays, teaching online is getting more and more utilized by nearly all areas of education. Teaching English online has no exception. This book, therefore, is a nice start for the teachers interested in teaching online. The book provides online resources and strategies to be used in the online teaching for all 4 skills.

  3. Dear David and all,

I am really interested in "ETpedia 1,000 ideas for English language teachers". This excellent resource provides 1,000 tips, techniques, questions, thoughts and ideas for teachers to use for both in class and to prepare lessons in advanced.

Each section covers a different aspect of teaching e.g. grammar, listening, speaking, games, etc. One activity that I came across from this fabulous textbook is Unit 30: 10 Types of exercise for functional expressions". This unit introduces 10 simple and fun exercises for helping students to increase their understanding about useful phases and expressions.

    1. Categories the expression by the function.
“Are these expressions offers or requests? Write O (offer) or R (request)”

    2. Re-order the words
“Write these expressions in the correct order.”

    3. Gapfill the missing verb.
    “Write the missing verb.”

    4. Complete a conversation with a phases
“Write the expressions in the conversation”

    5. Reorder the conversation
“Put the sentences into the correct order.”

    6. Match the two halves of a sentence
    “Match 1-5 to A-E”

    7. Give the first letter
    “Complete these expressions.”

    8. Match the questions to the response
    “Match 1-5 to A-E”

    9. Giving a choice
    “Tick the polite response.”

    10. Students personalise the expressions
“Complete the expressions with your own words.”

I really love this resource and I wish I could have take it back with me to Thailand. That would be awesome!

  4. I have read about teaching tips for developing creative thinking. The writer raised twenty activities to do. "Thirty things I did" is the one I like. This is suit for the students in pre-intermediate level. The lesson should be focused on past simple tense, vocabulary, and writing. The activity takes time about fifteen minutes. The teacher asks students to write ten sentences about what they did over the weekend. If the students say "10?", the teacher will say "not 10, but 20". If the student say "20!", the teacher will say "Oh, not 20, then 25!". Play game until the students get the message that the more complain, the more work. The advantages of this activity are writing, learning about past simple, and thinking. I will take this activity back into my classes. I may change the tense, such as present perfect tense and future tense. The writer recommended that it can be applied to stimulate the students' brains. For example, the teacher ask the student to write down ten reasons why someone might not answer their phone (English phone speaking).

  8. Dear David,
From reviewing "how to" resource books for English language teaching today, "Techniques in Teaching Writing" is one of the books that I like. I mostly like this book because it is provided entirely to the presentation and exemplification of practical techniques in the teaching of writing. Each chapter contains various techniques and example activities that teachers can perform that tie the content of the book directly to the teachers' responsibilities in their classes. I think one of the techniques that I can use in my writing class is "techniques in using pictures." I can use a set of pictures such as events or festivals and then ask my students to write and share about their experiences relating to the pictures in the classroom. I hope my students will love this activity.

  10. Dear David,
Something went wrong with my account! My posted yesterday disappeared. So, here I am again. My book of choice is called "Lessons for Nothing: Activities for Language Teaching with Limited Time and Resources” by Bruce Marsland. I am interested in this book because it has a wide range of activities. There are loads of creative ideas that teachers can easily adapt for their teaching. One of my favourite activities is “Giving a present”. It allows students to practice how to use sentences, such as “I would give a…………..to……………because………….”. The students have to write these sentences in one side of card and their friend’s name on the other side. Then, they need to approach their friend and tell him/her. The teacher observes and pick up some good or not so good conversation and explain it to the class. It is easy to apply with a big class. It can be applied with other tenses as well. I think if my students are in advanced level, they can describe more about the present. Busy teachers would love to read this book.

  11. Dear David,

I had a chance to look at one of the most effective resources for teaching English called “Penny Ur’s 100 Teaching Tips”. My favourite quotation from this resource is “Games that involve engaging with the language are useful for raising motivation, especially thought not only for younger classes. But they need to be carefully selected or designed to make sure they do in fact work: that they are both “gamcy’ and learning-rich.”

Regarding this resource, there are tips of using games in teaching.
    1. Teachers have to make sure to pick the game that is fun.
    2. Teachers have to check that the games are learning-rich.
    3. Teachers have to make sure that the games can involve all students.

  12. I am interested in the book titled ‘Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking’ written by I. S. P. Nation and J. Newton published in 2009. I like this book because it is well written and organized. The authors guides teachers how to teach listening and speaking effectively. The book provides comprehensible principles of teaching listening and speaking skills to students; a variety of teaching listening and speaking techniques; and development fluency in both techniques. Moreover, how to monitor and test students’ progresses is suggested in this book. I would recommend teachers who plan to teach listening and speaking that they should read this book first. For me, I am particularly interested in a dictogloss technique developed from a traditional dictation activity. Although teachers have seldom used the dictation technique in teaching undergraduate classes because of its disadvantages, I found the dictogloss technique was interesting and helped to improve listening, speaking, writing, and reading skill among students in creative ways. I think this dictogloss technique is helpful and easily applied to my nursing classes. It also build students’ personal and team learning. So I plan to apply the dictogloss technique to my future nursing class.

  14. Vocabulary in Action by Linda Taylor
Publisher: Prentice Hall (February 1, 1992)

I prefer to use this book regarding its activities are useful in all level of English classroom.

The writer organises the content to 11 sections. Each section shows and describes each activity in deail. The teacher can apply those activities by little amendedment.

In page structure and content, the writer provide the definitions and give suffient details. For example, Mother tounge equivalence, the writer refer to the learner schema to start learning new vocabulary. The learner can link their knowledge to new knowledge. In addition, this activity also shows respect to the learners. It allows the learner to achieve their target without hesitate or mother languange is banned in classroom. There are still some more positive aspect fro the book therfore I will fine the hard copy and pout in to thelibrary.

The activity in this book are useful as same as teacher have the value material in their hands. I would like to show one activity for example. This activity is in Mother tongue equivalence section under activity 1 Marks on paper. This activity is suitable for Elementary to advanced, especially mixed-nationality groups. There are no restriction with the ages therefore I assume I can use it for all. This activity is fleible enough to work in individuality, pairs, group, or whole class.
